3 Scripts To Help You Disarm Trolls

I wrote a mega post last week on Trolls, which caused me lots of anxiety when I first started streaming.

I quickly realized though that they mainly had the same comments over and over.

Here are some answers I have to the most common things that people say on my channel.

I no longer let my fear of the unknown prevent me from building my streaming side business.

My Exact Scrips Used to Combat Trolls

Here some exact scripts that I use every time a troll enters my chat! I’m not perfect, sometimes I will ignore it and let the chat take care of it, other times I will drop the hammer. Most of the time I kill them with kindness though and it makes for a fun challenge.

Script 1- “You stink at this game”

Lots of people think “who would want to watch ME play this game?”

The truth is, most streams are not meant to be run by highly competitive players.

Yes, there are speed runs and competitive style streams but there are players that fit every category.

There are channels out there with thousands of followers or subscribers where being terrible is the entire point. Who doesn’t love a good fail video? Why does everyone have to be an all-star!

I spent a 4 hour stream last week playing FIFA where I was getting team building advice from the chat. It was one of the best playing experiences I had in a long time! I meant to just play for 1 quick hour and ended up learning tons during a 4 hour session.

Yes, I did stink at the specific team building side of FIFA, but my chat was outstanding and I learned a ton from them, which in turn helped many others!

What I Say – “Haha, thanks man, I know I’m not so great, I’m trying to improve actually. Hopefully it is still entertaining though, thankfully I have an awesome chat who is teaching me the ropes. “

Shooters – “Haha, yeah, I can’t believe I just went 4 and 16 in that Call of Duty round either, what is your best round?  Oh, dang! “What setup do you use, I might try that”

Madden/Sports  – “What playbook or team do you use?”

League of Legends – “What character or build do you go with, I might try him next game”

Hearthstone – “Yeah, that guy had a good deck, I gotta switch it up, what deck do you roll with, can you help me adjust mine?”

Minecraft – “I didn’t know you could be terrible at minecraft, but I guess you learn something new every day”

Why It Works

People who say you stink want to be recognized as an expert at the game. So if an expert stops by your match, the quickest way to disarm them is to agree with them!

If they say you suck, and you say yes I do, then they are right. You can tell if they are truly trying to be helpful by asking for advice. What would you do here? If they can give you good details, that helps, but if they just say “kill yourself” then you know they are just trolls and then you ban them.

Then, try to imagine that interaction taking place in the real world. Ming blowing right! Imagine what some miserable person who just crawled out of their cave long enough to tell you awful things looks like. Think of how lucky they are that the Internet ban hammer isn’t a fist in the face.

Script 2 – “Your products cost too much”

This may be for the future when you have a subscriber button or sell shirts or other items on your channel to help turn it into a side business.

What I Say – “I’m sorry you don’t see the value, we have thousands of people that it works really well for and love it!”  “Did you know we have hundreds of free video’s, we don’t ask for a penny”

You need to make sure to provide value to your viewers and subscribers. That can mean many different things, but it is what makes setting goals so important and keeping your ear to the ground for feedback from your true fans.

Earning side income is a perk and while many of you still may be working towards it, the more value you can build up now, the easier it will be to ask later.

I’ve read a specific blog for over 5 years now and when he finally asked me to buy something, I didn’t get angry or say I can’t believe it. I made a choice that what he was selling was either right for me at that value or not right.

We give away most of our best content for free especially to newsletter subscribers because you guys have shown you know how to take action. Even these scripts are an example of something that other sites would charge money for. I know better than to think short term.

We want you to have success now so later if we do offer something above and beyond, you will understand the value of it. If not, that is totally cool too.

The first time I sold something online, it cost 5 dollars and I was TERRIFIED that people would call me a sell out even after 2 full years of giving away stuff for free. I was so afraid that I offered to give people my CELL PHONE NUMBER so they could contact me at any time. I mean 5 dollars is a FREAKING Latte as Starbucks and I gave away my phone number, PEOPLE STILL CALL ME!

The truth is, you want people that value what you are selling and will actually take action with the material. People who just read and don’t do anything aren’t very helpful. If you offer something, make it valuable and don’t question yourself. Think about the long term instead of trying to make the quick buck. We will continue to write free posts like this that are better than most other paid material out there.

“I can’t believe that costs 75 dollars, if it was 10, I might buy it”

If you give it to that person for 10 dollars, half the time they will still say no and the other half they won’t take any action because they don’t respect the value.

Those people will cause you most of the headaches anyway.

Script 3 – “How did you get viewers, I could do this better than you”

What I Say – “Do you have a channel?”   “Oh, I gotcha man, I’ll check you out when you end up getting that microphone or capture card, or new internet connection etc”

Why It Works – This is commonly from the jealous gamer who sees you putting yourself out there and wants to bring you down. Most often, they think that streaming is easy but haven’t started. Most likely, they are probably afraid, so when you ask to see their channel, they won’t respond. Or they will and you will realize they have like 5 followers.

Why do most of the people who tell me I suck have egg avatars on twitter? Why is their entire timeline of tweets hate messages to Taylor Swift?

Once again, imagine that taking place in real life! WHAT?

Pro Tip: Make sure to separate the comments from valid complaints. If you are doing shady giveaways or tactics to boost stream, those won’t last. You must build trust with your followers to have long term success. Make sure to ask your most trusted viewers for feedback and look to see if there are any common threads.
