How to Stand Out From the Crowd & Own the Dance Floor (literally)

Screen Shot 2014-06-03 at 5.40.41 PMI’m really bad at dancing.

Like really bad.

My go to move is usually some type of arm movement along with putting my “hands in the air and waving them like I just don’t care”.

However, I do have one go to move (thanks Graham) that usually takes the entire dance floor by storm. This one dance move is so electrifying that it literally gets the entire place to form a circle and join in.

In fact it has never not worked in terms of getting people excited and having a good time…

Own the Dance Floor…

..but first I want to talk about one specific form of marketing that I have seen recently in the Boston, MA area.

Herb Chambers of Boston, MA. This is a car dealership that has been advertising on billboards on local highways. Typically I gloss over billboards and they never leave an impression on me (bad for them and good for me).

Yet, Herb Chambers has capture my attention recently with their advertisements. They have been selling to me how easy and fair they’re to potential customers by creating simple yet creative copy.

What they’re doing is addressing common issues with going to car dealerships…

…they’re to salesie (not sure this is a word, but I think we all use it all the time)

…they force you into decisions

…they’re just looking to close the sale

Once these issues were identified they then simply stated that they’re none of them and use a picture to explain the punch line.

For example they use a picture of a screw to accompany the text…

“We won’t (insert image of a screw here) you”

It’s different. The text is simple. The image is creative. What is the lasting impact of this ad?

I’m telling you about it…aren’t I?

What I find so amazing about this type of advertising is that its playing the opposite game (aka Blue Ocean Strategy) and its going against most standard forms of billboard advertising.

What do you usually see? SALE SALE SALE SALE. 50% off this & 50% off that. Over time this looses its wow factor and we eventually start looking the other way.

Herb Chambers took a risk and tried to be creative, but kept it simple enough for me to understand quickly.

Ahh the infamous dance move.

Here it is:

1. Grab a glass of water.
2. Put it in the middle of the dance floor.
3. Grab a few friends & start dancing on and around it
4. Treat this glass of water as some type of holy being.
5. REALLY sell into the fact that this glass of water is a holy being.
6. Sit back & watch everyone flock to do the same

It sounds crazy & thats because it is.

Thats exactly why its effective as well.

It’s different. The dancing is simple. The glass is creative. What is the lasting impact of this move?

People want to be apart of things that are different, fun & exciting.

Just like the Herb Chambers ad this dance catches peoples attention and it holds it. It’s contagious and it spreads like wild fire.

Now go out there and own the next dance floor you see and always try to keep your message different, simple & creative.
